PARSHA & PROSE: VAYISHLACH AND 'THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA' (Audio/Visual)
Tuesday Dec 10, 2024
Tuesday Dec 10, 2024
The Torah portion Vayishlach, found in Genesis 32:4–36:43, tells the story of Jacob’s reunion with his estranged brother Esau, his wrestling with an angel, and his eventual return to the land of Canaan. It also includes the tragic account of the massacre of Shechem and the growth of Jacob's family. This portion explores themes of reconciliation, struggle, and personal transformation. In a similar vein, Ernest Hemingway’s novel The Old Man and the Sea centers on the lone struggle of Santiago, an aging fisherman, as he battles a giant marlin far out in the ocean. Both works explore the inner strength and perseverance required to face life's challenges, whether in the context of family conflict and divine encounters, as in Vayishlach, or in the solitary, epic battle of Santiago. Both narratives emphasize the complex relationship between struggle, identity, and the pursuit of redemption, portraying characters who confront and overcome adversity with courage, determination, and faith.

Founded in 2002 by Menachem Kuchar during the Second Intifada, the initiative was born out of a desire to give some nutritional peace and sustance to soldiers, through the universal language of food. The organization's mission focuses on providing pizzas made through local businesses. In 2010, the leadership of PIZZAIDF was passed to Menachem’s son, Elisha Kuchar, who continued to expand the reach of the organization. This interview was conducted in northern Israel, while Elisha is serving in the army. Under Elisha's guidance, PIZZAIDF has remained committed to its core values of helping small business owners and filling the stomachs of Israeli's fighters. Prior to the Jewish holiday of Chanukah, PIZZAIDF also delivers donuts, a popular dessert at this time, to army bases, and behind enemy lines. The Torah portion of Toledoth (Genesis 25:19–28:9) chronicles the generations of Isaac, focusing on the birth and lives of his sons, Esau and Jacob, and their complex relationship. It explores themes of sibling rivalry, birthright, deception, and divine election, with Jacob receiving the blessing meant for Esau, despite being the younger son. Similarly, John Steinbeck’s East of Eden mirrors these themes in a modern context, drawing clear parallels between the biblical story and the lives of two sets of brothers: Charles and Adam Trask, and later, Adam's sons, Aron and Cal. Both narratives explore the dynamics of favoritism, jealousy, and the struggle for identity, inheritance, and approval. In Toledoth, God’s will overcomes human scheming, as Jacob becomes the chosen one despite his deceptive methods, just as in East of Eden, the characters wrestle with inherited sin and the quest for redemption. Both stories highlight the tension between personal agency and divine destiny, examining how individuals navigate the moral complexities of their circumstances.
